Xueli is 14 years old and was born with #albinism in #china (Xuchang). Albinism is an inherited genetic condition that reduces the amount of melanin pigment formed in the skin, hair and/or eyes.

Albinism occurs in all racial and ethnic groups throughout the world. Xueli is visually impaired, can only see 10%, has wobbly eyes and is very sensitive to light. When she was approx. 8 months old she was brought to an orphanage most probably due to her albinism. In China it is believed albinism brings bad luck to the family. At the age of 3 she was adopted and now lives in The Netherlands. She is very sportive and loves #judo and running.

Xueli knows that also in other countries albinism is not accepted and children are even in danger. Therefore, she wants to raise awareness on albinism and make people understand that every human being is unique and we should celebrate diversity. She has for instance done some photoshoots to collect funds for organisations trying to end violence against people with albinism. It is her dream to one day have her own huge billboard image in Beijing to show the Chinese people she is an ordinary Chinese girl who wants to make her birthparents proud of who she is and just the way she is.
